Learn German Words With German Flash Cards

If you are learning a foreign language like German, one of the hardest things to do is to learn and remember new words. To improve your language skills and to make you a better German speaker, you must read German on a regular basis. In order to learn new words, you must read, read and read some more. You can not learn German without reading the German language on a continual basis.

You need to start collecting new words. A good source of reading material is a German newspaper or magazine. If you can not find a German newspaper or magazine, read the online versions of important German magazines like Stern and Focus. Find one article that is not too long and take time to read it. Print the article so that you can find it again later.

Make a list of all of the German words that you do not understand. Using index cards and a German dictionary, make German/English flash cards. Write one German word on one side of an index card with the translation in English on the other side. Flip through the cards, first with the German side. Try to remember the German word. After you can do this easily reverse the exercise from English to German.

Keep these cards with you at all times. Reread them often and try to memorise each words and the sounds they makes as you pronounce them. To make sure that you remember new words you need to repeat this exercise on a regular basis.

After you are comfortable with these words go back and read the German article again.

If you do this regularly you will find that the list of words that you do not know will get shorter and shorter. You will start to recognize common words being used over and over in the articles you read. This works particularly well if you use the same source for your articles. Eventually you will find that there are hardly any words highlighted in the articles that you read. This means that you are making progress.

If this sounds boring and monotonous, maybe you should find another hobby instead. Personally, I love to learn new words. There is great satisfaction in being able to read an article in a foreign language. Flash cards are a great and affordable way to build a German vocabulary. Of course, a strong vocabulary is essential when learning to speak a new language.
